Channi Singh OBE, hailed as the Godfather of Bhangra, is a pioneering artist whose impact on Punjabi music has been global and groundbreaking. He is the founder and lead singer of Alaap, the legendary band that transformed the Bhangra music scene.
After moving to England in 1976, Channi noticed that the younger generation of the Asian community had limited connections to their cultural heritage. To bridge this gap, he formed Alaap in 1977, introducing a fresh and modern sound that fused traditional and western instrumentation. This innovation revolutionised Punjabi music, earning Alaap international acclaim as the pioneers of modern Bhangra music and leading to its worldwide recognition.
Channi’s illustrious career includes evergreen hits, genre-defining albums, and trailblazing collaborations with iconic artists such as Asha Bhosle and Anuradha Paudwal—a first for any Bhangra artist. He was also the first British Bhangra artist to compose and direct music for Bollywood films, such as Yalgaar, Shaktiman, and Janasheen. His influence on the industry is profound, with several Bollywood films plagiarising his compositions, including Mujhe Neend Na Aaye (Dil, 1990), copied from his song Chunni Ud Ud Jae (1986), and Main Pyar Ki Pujaran (Hatya, 1988), lifted from Pyar De Pujari (1986).
Breaking ground as the first Bhangra band to perform on mainstream TV channels, at prestigious venues across the globe, and for leading music festivals, Channi and Alaap played a vital role in elevating Punjabi music to new heights. Their boundary-pushing performances saw them share the stage with world renowned artists, and over the years, they have received countless accolades for their contributions to music, including triple gold
and platinum awards for exceptional album sales. Alaap’s enduring impact also earned them recognition in Guinness World Records as “the most successful and longest-running Bhangra band.”
In June 2012, Channi was honoured as the first Punjabi music artist to be appointed an OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) by Her Majesty The Queen for his services to music, charity, and community work. Earlier that same year, he and his daughter, Mona Singh, became the first Bhangra artists to perform at 10 Downing Street, at the invitation of former Prime Minister David Cameron.
Beyond music, Channi has dedicated over 30 years to community service, running a Community Centre in Hounslow, West London, supporting the elderly, disabled, and those with long-term health conditions.
With a career spanning nearly five decades, Channi Singh OBE has been instrumental in shaping the Bhangra music scene, bringing it to international audiences, and paving the way for many other artists to follow. His contributions have left a lasting legacy in the music industry, cementing his status as a true Bhangra legend.

UK actress Raj Shoker to debut opposite Sonam Bajwa in the Panjabi movie Jind Mahi
Raj Shoker is set for her silver screen debut opposite Sonam Bajwa in the Panjabi movie Jind Mahi, which releases worldwide on 5th August 2022.
No stranger to UK audiences, Raj has skilfully presented the official Punjabi music chart, exclusively compiled by the official charts company on BritAsiaTV, since 2019.
Raj, who started out as an inexperienced vlogger at the age of 16 years old, has grown a huge online following over a short period of time. Her big break soon followed when she was cast opposite Satinder Sartaaj within the music video ‘Udaarian’, which has amassed over 200 million views on YouTube.
Raj has since gone on to cement her position as one of the Brit-Asian industry’s most in-demand personalities, hosting several high-profile events, including sold out concerts and red-carpet events at some of the UK’s biggest arenas.
Jind Mahi sees Raj debut opposite Panjabi superstar actress Sonam Bajwa, Ajay Sarkaria, and Gurnam Bhullar. Raj has spent the last twelve months between the UK & India, where she has also been filming her second movie, this time opposite Gippy Grewal & Tania.
Jind Mahi has been produced by White Hill Studios and is being pitched as a refreshing take on love and romance that Punjabi cinema will bear witness for the first time.
