During a first visit to Birmingham on 03-04 October 2022, High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom Vikram Doraiswami met representatives of wide cross-section of the Indian diaspora, representing India’s religious, linguistic and regional diversity in the West Midlands.
The discussions spanned a range of issues including community cohesion; strengthening the ‘living bridge’ by increasing the participation of diaspora youth in political, cultural and business links; travel and consular services; the need for better and faster communication to counter misinformation; promoting greater interaction among the diverse linguistic and religious Indian communities; and the need to fortify Indian diaspora unity including by participating in each other’s events.
The gathering also discussed priorities for the India-UK partnership, based on the perspective that the community benefits most from the increased depth and breadth of the India-UK partnership, as do both countries.
The High Commissioner discussed issues raised in detail in an interactive session. Apart from exhorting the community to remain vigilant against misinformation and motivated provocations, the HC assured that the Consulate General and High Commission teams will work with the community, as partners, to address their issues and strengthen the robust relationship between India and its diaspora in the UK.
