City Sikhs proudly marked the 555th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, at an inspiring event in the UK Parliament on 21st November 2024. The gathering, hosted by Warinder Juss MP and supported by Gurinder Singh Josan MP, celebrated Guru Nanak’s enduring message of equality, compassion, and selfless service. The event brought together parliamentarians, faith leaders, and community activists to honour Guru Nanak’s universal teachings, emphasising the relevance of his vision in today’s interconnected world. |
Inspiring Addresses Amrit Singh Bahia, founder of the ‘555 Acts of Kindness’ initiative, focussed on encouraging individuals to commit to meaningful acts of kindness, no matter how big or small, embodying Guru Nanak’s principles. His initiative has mobilised individuals worldwide to reflect on the Guru’s legacy through service. Professor Eleanor Nesbitt, a distinguished academic of Sikh Studies, shared excerpts from her recently published book “Sikh: Two Centuries of Western Women’s Art & Writing” and imparted the importance of looking beyond translated texts to understand the true meaning of Sikh scriptures. Dr Deesha Chadha OBE, lecturer at Imperial College London and Co-Chair of the Faiths Forum for London, shared how Guru Nanak’s teachings and philosophy inspires many Hindus across the world. Rabbi Charley Baginsky, Co-Rabbi in Chief of Progressive Judaism, highlighted how faith provides much needed illumination for many people across the world, as well as guidance for individuals in their daily lives. Akeela Ahmed MBE, founder of She Speaks We Hear and trustee of Nisa-Nashim, spoke passionately about the friendship between Guru Nanak and Bhai Mardana, and how that should inspire Sikhs and Muslims to work together in the future. |
A Celebration of Diversity and Unity The event celebrated the diversity of faiths and cultures while reflecting on Guru Nanak’s timeless values of oneness and humanity. In his closing remarks, Warinder Juss MP applauded the event for bringing together leaders across different faiths to honour Guru Nanak’s inclusive vision. Speaking on behalf of City Sikhs, Co-Chairs Param Singh MBE and Jasvir Singh CBE said, “Guru Nanak’s teachings transcend all boundaries, offering hope and guidance for creating a more compassionate and inclusive society. This event was a timely testament to Guru Ji’s enduring influence.” The evening concluded with a call for continued reflection on Guru Nanak’s teachings through action, collaboration, and dialogue. |
