A true ambassador of Punjabi music and culture, Channi Singh said “I wanted to create a song that would resonate with my diverse audience. My daughter Mona Singh and I had a great time working on the creative process together and I’m sure everyone will enjoy the song as much as we enjoyed making it.”

As a pioneer in the Punjabi music industry with a career spanning decades and a string of chart-topping hits to his name, Channi Singh continues to showcase his enduring ability to innovate and inspire generations of fans with his timeless music.
Highly acclaimed and internationally renowned Bhangra artist Channi Singh OBE is founder and lead singer of famous Bhangra band Alaap, known for revolutionising the Bhangra music scene.

Channi moved to England in 1976 and realised that the Asian community, particularly the youngsters, had very few links with their cultural heritage. Channi believed that music would be the best approach in educating them about their cultural roots and due to this he thought of forming his own band. This was the beginning of a new era and the birth of Alaap.

Formed in 1977, Channi and Alaap created a new modern sound by fusing eastern and western instrumentation and became responsible for changing the entire face of Punjabi music.

During his illustrious career, Channi has had many milestones that have included countless hit songs, game-changing albums, path-breaking collaborations with legends like Asha Bhosle and Anuradha Paudwal, working in Bollywood as Music Director for films like Yalgaar, Shaktiman and Janasheen, and performing at major venues around the world as the first Punjabi artist.

Over the years, a number of Bollywood films have also plagiarised Channi’s hit compositions such as the famous song Mujhe Neend Na Aaye from film Dil, which is a copy of Channi’s original song Chunni Ud Ud Jae, and the song Main Pyar Ki Pujaran from film Hatya, which is a copy of Channi’s original song Pyar De Pujari.

In addition to his successful music career, Channi is actively involved in charity and community work for the past 30 years. He runs a Community Centre in Hounslow, West London, which provides a range of services for the elderly, disabled and chronically ill.

In June 2012, a prestigious honour was bestowed on Channi when he became the first Punjabi music artist to be appointed an OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) by Her Majesty The Queen for his services to Bhangra music, charity and community work. In early 2012, Channi and his daughter, Mona Singh, also became the first Bhangra artists to perform at 10 Downing Street.

Kursi Bhangra is available now on all major streaming platforms.
