Growing up in the 1970s, life wasn’t easy for Jag Singh. From the young age of eight, he was bombarded with abuse and surrounded by bullying, racism, and mental health challenges. The struggles he endured took him many years to process and overcome.
Like many who face such pressures, there were times when the future seemed uncertain for Singh. He never thought he would make it past his teens alive. Yet these experiences shaped a powerful sense of purpose for Singh. At a very young age, he made a promise to himself that he would honour for the rest of his life. The promise was straightforward: if he could somehow overcome those challenging years, he would one day share his story of survival to inspire and support others facing similar struggles.
Singh is the founder of UNBREAKABLE MOTIVATION (UM), an initiative dedicated to raising awareness of safeguarding and supporting young people facing challenges. His goal is to engage with educational institutions, training providers, youth clubs, and faith and community groups. UM’s life-enhancing sessions help young people build resilience, develop self-belief, and make positive choices. Through his real-life experiences, Singh shows young people that difficult beginnings do not have to define the future and that everyone is entitled to happiness.
During his turbulent childhood in East London in the 1980s, Singh jumped from the frying pan into the fire. As a teenager, he was surrounded by knife crime and gang-related violence; at that time, it was common for many young people to carry knives. With support and perseverance, Singh was able to turn his life around and break free from that destructive path. Today, through his sessions, he speaks about the devastating impact of knife crime and the steps he took to make positive changes.
Unfortunately, issues such as bullying, racism, mental health pressures and the dangers surrounding knife crime have not gone away. By speaking openly about these topics, Singh aims to help students understand the consequences of negative choices while encouraging them to recognise their own value and potential.
Singh is not a mental health professional, but he speaks openly about the challenges he faced as a child. In his sessions, he reflects on the steps he took to seek professional help and encourages others to do the same. For many, reaching out for support is often the hardest step to take. By sharing his journey, Singh guides young people to understand that asking for help and speaking to a professional is a sign of strength.
As a member of the Sikh community and a fluent Punjabi speaker, Singh is contacting Punjabi class teachers and wellbeing groups in Gurdwaras to offer UM sessions to their pupils, the next generation, and share his advice. He recognises how crucial it is to connect with young people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Having grown up in a multicultural society in London, Singh’s ability to communicate across cultures allows him to engage students in a way that feels relatable and authentic. His outreach also extends to all faith groups.
Through his work, Singh hopes to show young people that resilience and determination can help shape a positive future, regardless of the obstacles they encounter.
Singh has detailed the challenges he faced as a child in his autobiography, UNBREAKABLE: Part One: Wrong Place, Wrong Time. UNBREAKABLE is part of a trilogy, with Part Two scheduled for release in June 2026. The books recount the traumatic events he experienced as a child, highlighting the ongoing and critical need for safeguarding awareness.
As an Ethnic, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) speaker, Singh has worked with numerous businesses, engaging employees at every level, from management to staff. Drawing on his lived experiences, he speaks about race, inclusion and cultural change. Singh delivers talks with an aim to assist companies to reduce discrimination, foster inclusive workplaces, and improve understanding of diverse backgrounds.
UNBREAKABLE MOTIVATION seminars and workshops are available to schools, youth and community groups, faith organisations, and businesses across the UK and internationally.
